Symbolic and Significant #LightingTheTorch Ceremony #MandelaMarathon 5 August 2013

by on August 5, 2013

From this flame, annually, on the anniversary of Mr Mandela’s capture, a torch will be lit and, over the next three weeks, traverse the Province of KwaZulu Natal, bringing light and warmth to the free hearts and souls of its people, finally returning to uMgungundlovu, where another Great Spirit, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu (Father of Nation) experienced his life changing experience. Here a crucible, similar to that at the Capture Site, will be lit. This flame will burn until it is ceremoniously extinguished after the annual running of the Mandela Day Marathon, on the last Sunday of August.

In this ceremony, and in the participation of the runners in the Mandela Day Marathon, the Spirit and struggle of the people of South Africa, led by the iron will and sterling, yet compassionate and irrepressible, character of Mr Mandela, will burn forever. And in this flame, we will find the warmth, light and comfort that will unite us all in the ongoing struggle to make this Country, Continent and the World a better place for future generations.

Why a Flame?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Olympic flame is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since. In contrast to the Olympic flame proper, the torch relay of modern times, which transports the flame from Greece to the various designated sites of the games, had no ancient precedent and was introduced by Carl Diem at the controversial 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.
